The fifth and final (?) episode of Psalm Summer is about the Psalms of Ascents, Hallel Psalms, and other times Jesus quoted the psalms directly in his ministry!

Here’s some of the info I was sharing about the psalms Jesus quoted!

  • During his Temptation (circa 27 AD): Jesus quoted Psalm 91:11–12 when Satan tempted him to throw himself off the temple (Matthew 4:6–7).
  • Cleansing the Temple (circa 30 AD): He quoted Psalm 8:2 to the chief priests and scribes to validate the children praising him in the temple (Matthew 21:16).
  •  Psalm 2, particularly verses 7–8: “The Lord said to me, ‘You are my Son; today I have begotten you. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your  heritage.’” // baptism
  • Questioning the Pharisees: Jesus outsmarted the Pharisees by quoting Psalm 110:1 to demonstrate that the Messiah is not just David’s son, but David’s Lord (Matthew 22:42–45).
  •  During Last Supper
    • The “one who is dipping bread into the dish with me,” adding that the Son of Man “goes as it is written of him” (Mark 14:20–21), Jesus likely had Psalm 41 in mind, verse 9 of which paints more fully the pangs of his soul: “Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me.”
    • Psalm 118:22: “The stone that the builders rejected has become the  cornerstone” – the Hallel song at the end of Passover Meal as they headed to Agony in the Garden
  • On the Cross:
    • Psalm 22:1: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).
    • Psalm 31:5: “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46).
